Dog Profiles: Goldendoodle

It’s been a golden year, and we’re ringing out the old year with the Goldendoodle.
  1. The Goldendoodle is a cross between the Golden Retriever and the Standard Poodle.
  2. The term Goldendoodle was created in response to the naming of the “Labradoodle” by Wally Conron. When the Neelands family, in 1992,  was asked if their dog was a Labradoodle, they responded “No, it’s a GOLDEN doodle” (and thereby coined the breed name)
  3. This breed is completely hypoallergenic .
  4. The unclipped hair of a Goldendoodle will grow out to 4 – 8 inches.
  5. A Goldendoodle who mates with a Poodle is more likely to produce a puppy who will not shed. This kind of breeding is called a “backcross.”
  6. The average life expectancy of a Goldendoodle is 15 years.
  7. Because they crave companionship and attention, The Goldendoodle acts out when they are left alone for too long.
  8. The color of their coat can be cream, gold, apricot, chocolate, gray, black, parti or phantom.
  9. A Goldendoodle who has a toy Poodle as one of its parents is designated as a Miniature Goldendoodle.
  10. “Hybrid Vigor” is the phenomenon wherein dogs who are the first generation result of two unrelated breeds mating are themselves much healthier than their parents are. This vigor weakens with each successive generation.
